The anticipation is reaching fever pitch as Cape Town gears up for the Barebones MMA Championship on July 13, 2024! This epic event will transform into a battleground for some of the most formidable mixed martial arts fighters from across the region. With tickets selling out fast, the excitement is palpable. Fans are eager to witness the raw, unfiltered combat that has made Barebones MMA a legendary name in the sport.
The Essence of MMA in South Africa
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has seen a meteoric rise in popularity in South Africa over the past decade. The country has become a hotbed for martial arts talent, producing world-class fighters who compete on international stages. South Africa’s unique blend of cultures and fighting styles has enriched the local MMA scene, making it one of the most dynamic in the world. From Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai to Boxing and Wrestling, South African fighters bring a diverse array of techniques to the octagon.
The Barebones MMA Experience
Barebones MMA is celebrated for its raw, no-frills approach to the sport. The focus is solely on the fighters and their performances, creating an intense, unfiltered experience for the audience. The championship provides a platform for emerging talents to make their mark, while seasoned fighters demonstrate their skills. Introducing the stars!
Youth Card: Rising Stars
The Youth card features promising young athletes who have already made their mark at Nationals:
- Jodi Van Der Walt – Elite MMA: Jodie will be attending Worlds this year. She has a background in kickboxing and made her MMA debut at Nationals, where she won gold.
- Skyla Richert – Mecs Martial Arts: Skyla will also be attending Worlds. She has a background in Grappling, winning Gold in under 65kg and Silver in under 70kg at Nationals this year.
- Dante Jones – Reps MMA: Dante attended Worlds last year and performed admirably, although he did not secure a podium finish. He has a notable record in Youth B MMA and Grappling, and has participated in several white-collar boxing fights this year.
- Joshua Eitner – Reps MMA: With a background in Karate, Joshua made his MMA debut at Nationals, placing 4th in his division.
The rest of the Youth card is filled with young hopefuls planning to make a name for themselves.
Adult Card
Main Event – Featherweight Title Match
- Iviwe Mphathiswa: Originally from Reps MMA in Cape Town, now fighting out of Pandamonium MMA in Gauteng. Iviwe has fought at Nationals several times, achieving Silver medal status. He also competed at the All African Championships in Namibia this year.
- Ameer Ghamza: Representing Cape Town, Ameer has a fight record in both Boxing and MMA. He has been climbing the ranks over the last two years by fighting at every available event.
Title Eliminators
Lightweight:
- Phillip Cronje – Knockout Centre: Phillip has an extensive striking record in Boxing, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. He fought well at Nationals this year but did not place.
- Luqmaan Hartley – Infinity MMA: Making his MMA debut with a long record in Boxing. This matchup promises a striking affair.
Flyweight:
- Gideon Devasahayam – SBG: Supported by Luke Micheal from the Cape Town Performance Institute. Gideon has fought in MMA for the last three years with a strong Grappling background, competing at Nationals in 2023 and 2024.
- Zaahir Abrahams – Fighters Inc.: With a background in MMA, Muay Thai, and Boxing, Zaahir aims to bring another title home to Fighters Inc. this year.
